Habitat for Humanities' mission is to build affordable housing at no-profit through a combination of volunteer labor, 'sweat-equity' and no-interest mortgages. We act in partnership with the community as a diverse group, including individuals, partner families, faith groups, civic organizations, local schools and businesses. We reach out from Christian roots across denominational, faith, economic and racial lines to bring together people who are concerned for their neighbors. We strive to develop and empower individuals and communities through the construction of simple, decent homes.

Testimony:
On the last Habitat Build Day a humble group of us gathered to help build some homes in Wilmington. I went to it not knowing a whole lot about home construction, but was still put to good use. I got to haul stuff around and use a nail gun! The coolest part though was seeing the future homeowners' excitement as we worked side by side with them. One homeowner said she liked knowing that the home she was building was her own and that made her want to work that much harder. The Habitat For Humanity program gives the homeowners a sense of dignity. People of low-income get a much needed boost if they are willing to work for it. All in all we contributed to the people of our city and strengthened the fabric of our church in being the hands and feet of Christ.

Doing the Habitat project with Crossroads was my first experience with a Habitat for Humanity project. I went into it unsure of what to expect and quite sleepy because of the early arrival time. I came out of it with a deeper understanding of the community in Wilmington. We were able to not simply work for families hoping for housing, but with them. They explained the process they go through to get their home, a good process of give and take between them and the community willing to support them with some time. Hearing their stories made these houses real-- a place for children to grow up safely with the parents who worked so hard to build them a home.
